A blech (from the German by way of Yiddish word for tin or sheet metal) is a metal sheet used by many observant Jews to cover stovetop burners (and for some, the knobs/dials too) on Shabbat (the Jewish Sabbath), as part of the precautions taken to avoid violating the halachic prohibition against cooking on the Sabbath by stirring the fire.

Common use

(Following excerpt with permission of publisher of The Blech Bookhe Complete & Illustrated Guide To Shabbos Hotplates, by Rabbi Fishel Jacobs link title.)

The food [including water] intended for Shabbos use, should be completely cooked.

The stove gas flames or electric coils are turned on. The blech is placed over these. Alternatively, the Shabbos hotplate, which needs no blech (when it is the type which has no knobs to adjust the heat level,) is plugged in.

The pot is placed on the blech. Note: It is permissible to place another pot on this one.

The pot on the blech, or another pot which has been placed on it, may be covered with a blanket, clothing, towel, cloth etc. to keep the heat from dissipating. One side of the pot should be left partially uncovered.

During Shabbos, the pots are removed according to need. After removal, it is permissible to return the pot onto the blech, following these guidelines:

The pot should be removed from the blech with the intention to replace it afterwards and held at all times, not leaned onto any surface. (A heavy or unwieldy pot may be partially leaned on a surface, while being held, if there is no alternative.)

The food must be in the same pot, completely cooked, and has retained at least some of its original heat.

Photo with permission of publisher of The Blech Book by Rabbi Fishel Jacobs.

The permisibility of blech (and unblech, below) and the acceptable manner of their use is questioned by several modern Kashruth organizations [1], however, the use of a Blech to re-heat food on the Sabbath remains very popular among observant Jews. [2]

Unblech

An unblech, or K’Deira Blech (lit. “pot blech”, commonly referred to as “water blech”), is also used to heat up pre-cooked food on the Sabbath, but utilizes different halakhic mechanisms than a standard blech. An unblech consists of a shallow metal pan filled with hot water and covered by another metal pan, and thus is akin to a pot of warm food for halakhic purposes. As such it may be more flexible than a standard blech for halakhic purposes. However, the temperature of an unblech is limited by the boiling point of water and is not as hot as a typical blech.

Rice paper usually refers to paper made from parts of the rice plant, like rice straw or rice flour. However, the term is also loosely used for paper made from or containing other plants, like hemp, bamboo or mulberry.

Rice paper plant

In Europe, around the 1900s, a paperlike substance was originally known as rice paper, due to the mistaken notion that it is made from rice. In fact, it consists of the pith of a small tree, Tetrapanax papyrifer, the rice paper plant.

The plant grows in the swampy forests of Taiwan, and is also cultivated as ornamental plant. In order to produce the paper, the boughs are boiled and freed from bark. The cylindrical core of pith is rolled on a hard flat surface against a knife, by which it is cut into thin sheets of a fine ivory-like texture.

Dyed in various colors, this rice paper is extensively used for the preparation of artificial flowers, while the white sheets are employed for watercolor drawings. Due to its texture this paper is not suited for writing.

Mulberry Paper

See also: Washi

The sort of paper that many people think of when hearing the term ice paper (smooth, thin, crackly, strong) is not actually made from rice at all. The paper is made from fibers from the bark of the mulberry tree. It got the name ice paper because it was used to make packets for rice. This sort of paper is used for origami, calligraphy, paper screens and clothing, etc. It is much stronger than commercially made wood-pulp paper. Although paper can be made from rice straw, this is not the ice paper that people usually think of.

The correct name for this type of paper is, depending on the type of mulberry used, kozo (Broussonetia papyrifera, the paper mulberry), gampi (Wikstroemia diplomorpha), or mitsumata (Edgeworthia chrysantha). The fiber comes from the bark of the mulberry, not the inner wood or pith, and traditionally the paper is made entirely by hand.

The branches of the mulberry shrubs are harvested in the fall, so the fiber can be processed and the paper formed during the cold winter months, because the fiber spoils easily in the heat. The branches are cut into sections two-three feet long and steamed in a large kettle, which makes the bark shrink back from the inner wood, allowing it to be pulled off like a banana peel. The bark can then be dried and stored, or used immediately. There are three layers to the bark at this stage: black bark, the outermost layer; green bark, the middle layer; and white bark, the innermost layer. All three layers can be made into paper, but the finest paper is made of white bark only.

If the bark strips have been dried, they are soaked in water overnight before being processed further. To clean the black and green bark from the white bark, the bark strip is spread on a board and scraped with a flat knife. Any knots or tough spots in the fiber are cut out and discarded at this stage.

The scraped bark strips are then cooked for two or three hours in a mixture of water and soda ash. The fiber is cooked enough when it can easily be pulled apart lengthwise. The strips are then rinsed several times in clean water to rinse off the soda ash. Rinsing also makes the fiber brighter and whiterine kozo paper is not bleached, it naturally pure white.

Each bark strip is then individually inspected, by hand, against a white background or lit from behind by a lightbox. Any tiny pieces of black bark and other debris are removed with tweezers, and any knots or tough patches of fiber missed during scraping are cut out of the strips. The ultimate goal is to have completely pure white bark.

The scraped, cooked, and cleaned strips are then laid out on a table and beaten by hand. The beating tool is a wooden bat that looks like a thicker version of a cricket bat. The fibers are beaten for about half an hour, or until all the fibers have been separated and no longer resemble strips of bark.

The prepared fiber can now be made into sheets of paper. A viscous substance called formation aid is added to the vat with the fiber and water. Formation aid is polyethylene oxide, and it helps slow the flow of water, which gives the papermaker more time to form sheets. Sheets are formed with multiple thin layers of fiber, one on top of another.

Edible paper

Rice paper can come in squares or circles

Edible rice paper is used for making fresh summer rolls (also called spring rolls) or fried spring rolls in Vietnamese cuisine, where the rice paper is called bh trg or bh ?a nem. Ingredients of the food rice paper include white rice flour, tapioca flour, salt, and water. The tapioca powder makes the rice paper glutinous and smooth. It is usually sold dried in thin, crisp, translucent round sheets that are wrapped…(and so on)

The Republic Aviation Corporation was an American aircraft manufacturer based in Farmingdale, Long Island, New York. Originally known as the Seversky Aircraft Company, the company was responsible for the design and production of many important military aircraft, including the P-47 Thunderbolt, F-84 Thunderjet, and F-105 Thunderchief.

Seversky Aircraft

The Seversky Aircraft Company was founded in 1931 by Alexander de Seversky, a Russian expatriate and veteran WWI pilot who had lost a leg in the war. In the beginning, many of Seversky Aircraft’s designers were Russian and Georgian engineers whom Seversky had rescued from Stalin’s purges by bringing them to the United States, including Michael Gregor and Alexander Kartveli, who would go on to design many of Republic’s most famous aircraft.

After several failed attempts, Seversky Aircraft finally won a design competition for a new United States Army Air Corps fighter, and was awarded its first military contract in 1936 for the production of its Seversky P-35.

In 1939, Seversky Aircraft again entered in a military fighter competition, this time with the much improved AP-4. Unfortunately, the contract was instead awarded to the somewhat inferior Curtiss P-40, but the Army Air Corps were very pleased with the aircraft’s medium- and high-altitude performance and ordered 13 additional AP-4s for testing.

Republic Aviation

By April 1939, the Seversky Aircraft Corporation had lost $550,000, and Seversky was forced out of the company he had founded. The board, led by financier Paul Moore, voted Wallice Kellet to replace him as president, and in September 1939, the company was reorganized as the Republic Aviation Corporation. Seversky continued to fight for his company, and the matter was not resolved to his satisfaction until September 1942.

Meanwhile, Seversky’s AP-4 continued in development, finally going into production as the P-43 Lancer. 272 P-43s were eventually produced, with 108 of them being sent to China to be used against the Japanese. Many passed through the hands of the AVG Flying Tigers,[citation needed] whose pilots were pleased with the plane’s performance at altitudes up to 30,000ft (9,100m), while their P-40s were ineffective at altitudes over 20,000ft (6,100m) Unfortunately, Claire Chennault disliked the early P-43’s lack of self-sealing fuel tanks and armor, and declined to retain the plane for his crews.

In 1939, both Republic and Curtiss participated in an Army competition to develop a lightweight interceptor. Curtiss submitted a lightweight version of the P-40 designated the XP-46 while Republic submitted a similar design designated the XP-47. Both designs were based on a lightweight aircraft built around an Allison V-1710 V-12 engine, with the Republic design using a turbosupercharger. In the end, neither design showed a significant improvement over the P-40, and neither was produced.

A 1943 advertisement for REPUBLIC AVIATION from Flight & Aircraft Engineer magazine

Further development of the P-43 continued in the form of a lightweight version using a Pratt & Whitney R-2180 radial engine. The resulting aircraft was known as the XP-44. When the R-2180 didn’t produce the expected horsepower, Republic switched to the Wright R-2600. Despite possessing 1,600horsepower (1,200kW), this engine couldn’t be turbo-supercharged and Republic finally modified the design again, this time to accommodate the enormous Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp engine, which produced 1,850horsepower (1,380kW). The resulting aircraft, now known as the P-44, was truly impressive. Capable of speeds of 404mph (650km/h) at 20,000ft (6,100m), and a climb rate of 4,000ft (1,200m) per minute, the aircraft would have been an exceptional interceptor. Unfortunately, the aircraft was capable of carrying no more fuel than the P-43, and the Double Wasp engine was far more thirsty, significantly limiting the aircraft’s range.

As the air war in Europe progressed, the Army was discovering that what it really needed was a long range fighter capable of escorting bombers into Germany. Alexander Kartveli was called to the Army’s Experimental Aircraft division and told of the new requirements, and that the P-44 would not be ordered in its current configuration. This was a devastating setback for Kartveli and Republic Aircraft because Kartveli knew the XP-44 could not be redesigned to meet these new requirements. On the train back to New York, he began…(and so on)

Fingermouse is the name of a British children’s television programme made by the BBC in 1985. The first episode was broadcast on November 4, 1985 on BBC1. The eponymous star was a paper finger puppet in the form of a mouse, who would play various musical instruments with the help of Iain Lauchlan, called the Music Man. Fingermouse also went adventuring outside, interacting with other paper puppets.

Each episode lasted fifteen minutes, and one series was made.

History

UK Benson & Hedges Silver box, with warning

Benson & Hedges was founded in 1873 by Richard Benson and William Hedges as Benson and Hedges Ltd. The company was formed to make cigarettes for the then Prince of Wales, Albert Edward. Alfred Paged Hedges succeeded his father in the business in 1885, the same year which Richard Benson left the business. The 1900s saw branches of Benson & Hedges Ltd. opening in the United States and Canada. In 1928, the American branch became independent, and was bought by Philip Morris in 1958 who also purchased the Canadian branch in 1960. Benson & Hedges Ltd in the UK was acquired by Gallaher Limited in 1955.

A Royal Warrant was issued to the British company in 1878, after the required five years of supply to the Royal Family. This was revoked in 1999 due to a “lack of demand in the royal households”[1]. The Warrant seal, which had previously been on the flip lid of the box, was removed.

Markets

UK (British) Market

Benson & Hedges is the second most popular brand available in the UK [1], particularly amongst the 16-30 age range of smokers, although they are relatively expensive compared to other brands. In contrast, Benson And Hedges Silvers are somewhat cheaper. However, they have a lower tobacco and nicotine content than the Gold brand. On 1 May 2007, Gallaher introduced Benson & Hedges Black. The new 10 mg ‘value for money’ cigarettes are available in slide packs of 20. There was a proposal to distribute packets of Gold in 16 in retail outlets in order to keep the price under ?5, however the idea was never fully implemented; however, packets of 14 are available in some retail outlets for a lower price.

Popular slang for Benson & Hedges in the UK is ‘B&H’, as in “I’ll have 20 B&H please”. In addition to this some smokers will request “20 Bensons please.”

Irish Market

Benson & Hedges sold in Ireland are generally identical to the UK, although prior to 2003 they were manufactured in the Republic, until the Irish production was also moved to Ballymena. Packs of 20 and 15 size are sold, 10 packs also existed prior to the ban on small sized packs by the Irish government in 2007; and the Black/Silver variants are not lower in price - again, having been the same price even before the introduction of a minimum selling price in 2007.

Benson & Hedges Gold are the most popular cigarettes in Ireland [2].

Overseas Market

In the 1930s, Benson & Hedges (Overseas) Ltd was established by Abraham Wix to handle overseas trade. This branch was acquired by British American Tobacco in 1956. Today, British American Tobacco markets Benson & Hedges throughout Asia and the Pacific, including Australia and New Zealand, but with the exception of Taiwan and the Philippines. They also own branches in the Middle East and Africa. B&H is popular amongst young smokers in Bangladesh, Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Nigeria, Australia and New Zealand. B&H cigarettes are also obtainable in Canada, a popular brand being “Belmonts”, which are manufactured by B&H in Toronto.

Australian Market

In Australia Benson & Hedges are available in the following variations: Classic, Rich, Smooth, Subtle, Fine and Ultimate, the colours of the packaging being Red, Purple, Blue, Sky Blue, Grey and White respectively.

Benson & Hedges Marketing Innovations

The American version of the cigarette is credited with starting the 1960s 100 mm craze. In 1967, the fledgling — and soon to be famous — ad agency of Wells, Rich, Greene introduced the longer cigarette with a Clio award-winning advertising campaign (Benson & Hedges 100, Television/Cinema, Best, 1967) based on the “disadvantages” of the Benson & Hedges 100s.[2][3] [4] [5]

In the UK market in the late 1970s Benson & Hedges ran a notable advertising campaign which actually turned to advantage the increasing curbs on what could be said and…(and so on)

Walkman music player

The W300i also functions as a Walkman Music Player and has a possible 2 GB of memory from the Memory Stick Micro slot although sandisk has recently announced an 8 GB version. The W300i can read both MP3 and MP4 tracks, and software which comes with the mobile phone (Disc2Phone) can convert other filetypes such as WMA, and although Album Artwork is not viewable, the W300i will read track details (via id3v1 tagging): Artist, Album, Song Name and sort them for easy access.

Known Issues

White Screen According to many owners, the screen has a tendency to freeze and/or go white. [2]

200px|This is a Sony Ericsson W300i showing the White Screen.

Flimsy Parts The top of the phone is also know to have some flex issues.[3]

Battery cover It has been stated in some official and unofficial reviews,[cite this quote] that the battery cover is very difficult to open. The User’s Manual shows that you only have to push out the battery cover, yet this is very difficult to accomplish.[citation needed] An easy fix for this is to put a eraser on the cover and use it to slide the cover open.

The word cherry refers to a fleshy fruit (drupe) that contains a single stony seed. The cherry belongs to the family Rosaceae, genus Prunus, along with almonds, peaches, plums, apricots and bird cherries. The subgenus, Cerasus, is distinguished by having the flowers in small corymbs of several together (not singly, nor in racemes), and by having a smooth fruit with only a weak groove or none along one side. The subgenus is native to the temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere, with two species in America, three in Europe, and the remainder in Asia. The word “cherry” comes from the French word “cerise”, which comes in turn from the Latin words cerasum and Cerasus.

Background

The cherry is generally understood to have been brought to Rome from northeastern Anatolia, historically known as the Pontus region, in 72 BC.[1] The city of Giresun in present-day Turkey was known to the ancient Greeks as Choerades or Pharnacia and later as Kerasous or Cerasus, < Kerason < Kerasounta < Kerasus “horn” (for peninsula) in Greek + ounta “Greek toponomical suffix.” The name later mutated into Kerasunt (sometimes written Kasounde or Kerassunde).

The English word cherry, French cerise, Spanish cereza, and Southern Italian dialect cerasa (standard Italian ciliegia) all come completely from Classical Greek ??????? “cherry,” which has been identified with Cerasus. The cherry was first exported to Europe from Cerasus in Roman times. [2] By the Middle Ages, cherries had disappeared in England. They were reestablished at Tyneham, near Sittingbourne in Kent by order of Henry VIII, who had tasted them in Flanders.[3][4][5]

The Greek people enjoy the red juice.

The Wild Cherry (P. avium) has given rise to the Sweet Cherry to which most cherry cultivars belong, and the Sour Cherry (P. cerasus) is used mainly for cooking. Both species originate in Europe and western Asia; they do not cross-pollinate each other. The other species, although having edible fruit, are not grown extensively for consumption, except in northern regions where the two main species will not grow. Irrigation, spraying, labor and their propensity to damage from rain and hail make cherries relatively expensive. Nonetheless, there is high demand for the fruit.

Major commercial cherry orchards in Europe extend from the Iberian peninsula east to Asia Minor, and to a smaller extent may also be grown in the Baltic States and southern Scandinavia. In the United States, most sweet cherries are grown in Washington, California and Oregon.[6] Important sweet cherry cultivars include “Bing,” “Brooks,” “Tulare,” “King” and “Rainier.” Both Oregon and Michigan provide light-colored “Royal Ann” (’Napoleon’; alternately “Queen Anne”) cherries for the maraschino cherry process. Most sour (also called tart) cherries are grown in Michigan, followed by Utah, New York, and Washington[6]. Additionally, native and non-native cherries grow well in Canada (Ontario and British Columbia). Sour cherries include Nanking and Evans Cherry. Traverse City, Michigan claims to be the “Cherry Capital of the World,” hosting a National Cherry Festival and making the world’s largest cherry pie. The specific region of Northern Michigan that is known the world over for tart cherry production is referred to as the “Traverse Bay”…(and so on)

The Madura was a cruiser motorcycle sold by Suzuki in 1985 and 1986. It was available with either 1200 cc or 700 cc V4 engines. It was created as a response to Honda’s Magna V4 muscle cruiser and was a direct competitor with Yamaha’s V-Max power cruiser, also released in 1985.

History

In response to the Honda Magna, Suzuki made the Madura model. Like the Magna, it was a V-four powered cruiser. Like the Magna, the Madura was offered with two different engine sizes. Both bikes’ smaller engines displaced 700 cc, but while the big Magna displaced 1100 cc, (actual 1098 cc) the big Madura displaced 1200 cc (actual 1165 cc).

Production of the Madura was halted after just two years. According to Peter Seifert of Vernon, B.C., Canada, 5099 Maduras were produced.

Features

The Madura had a V-four engine with hydraulic-lifters. The lifters reduced maintenance, and avoided the kind of cam-wear problems that plagued the Magna. Despite displacing 100 cc more, the Madura didn’t make much more horsepower or torque than the Magna. The Madura was factory rated at 117hp, while the Magna was rated at 116hp. Actual horsepower in a road-tested bike was found to be about 89. For comparison, a same year V65 put down 93hp.

In addition to the maintenance-free lifters, the Madura had a self-adjusting hydraulically actuated clutch, and a low-maintenance, shaft final drive. The rear suspension was a sophisticated monoshock arrangement that used a single rear swingarm tube to carry the driveshaft as well.

Ergonomically, the Madura featured a low, scooped seat, swept-back handle-bars, and foot-controls that wouldn’t be considered “forward” by later standards, but at the time were noted for being 14″ ahead of the center of the seat.

Speed

According to Cycle magazine, the 1200 cc Madura completed the 1/4-mile in 11.753 seconds at 115.08 mph. For comparison, on the same day the V65 Magna ran 11.86 at 115.86mph

Cycle Guide recorded an 11.36 at 117.18 1/4 mile. while their Magna clocked 11.44 at 118.42

Motorcyclist clocked a corrected 11.47 at 117.6 with the GV1200 Madura.

Cycle World magazine reported the 700 cc Madura doing the 1/4-mile in 12.89 seconds at 102.68 mph.

The Name

“Madura” is an island, a people and a language. It also means “mature” in Spanish. The characteristicly serpentine dagger known universally as a Madura was produced by the island’s natives and was likely the inspiration for this motorcycle’s name as it’s unique curved stepped seat and smoothly flowing lines resemble this knife. Also the knife was often used in passion in a swift surprise attack defending honor.

The Madura may have been named after the bull racing popular on the island. Riding these animals was most likely similarly exhilarating.

Tube Bending is a metalworking process used to permanently form stock tubing in to the shape of a die. Straight tube stock can be formed using a bending machine to create a variety of single or multiple bends and to shape the piece into the desired form. This process can be used to form complex shapes out of different types of ductile metal tubing.[1].

The picture is piping on an air condition system. Note that the bend kinks a little at the elbow, didn’t use an elaborate mandral.

Process

The process of Tube Bending involves using mechanical force to push stock material pipe or tubing against a die, forcing the pipe or tube to conform to the shape of the die. Often, stock tubing is held firmly in place while the end is rotated and rolled around the die. Other forms of processing including pushing stock through rollers that bend it into a simple curve. [2] For some tube bending processing, a mandrel is placed inside the tube to prevent collapsing. The tube is also held in tension by a wiper die to prevent any creasing during stress. A wiper die is usually made of a softer alloy i.e. aluminum, brass to avoid scratching or damaging the material being bent.

Tubing Geometry

A straight cylindrical tube can be transformed into a vast variety of shapes depending upon the needed application. A tube can be bent in multiple directions and angles. Although a single die can produce various shapes, it cannot shape other tube sizes and make different bend radii. Common simple bends consist of elbow (2-90 degrees), and U-bends. Complex bends include helical and coiled (more than one wrapping revolution), complex two-dimensional, and complex three dimensional bends as well. One side effect on the workpiece as a result of this process is the deformation of the wall thickness. The wall along the inner radius of the tube becomes thicker and the outer wall becomes thinner, depending on the tension in the tubing, the workpiece material, and the radius of the bend.

Tubing Specifications

Tube diameter can vary from 1/4″ - 8″ or approximately 6.3 mm - 203 mm. The cross section generally consists of a thin-wall with wall thickness varying from 0.031″ - 0.375″ or approximately 0.79 mm - 9.5 mm.

Mandrel Style

In production of a product where the bend is not critical a plug mandrel can be used. A form type tapers the end of the mandrel to provide more support in the bend of the tube. When precise bending is needed a ball mandrel (or ball mandrel with steel cable) should be used. The conjoined ball-like disks are inserted into the tubing to allow for bending while maintaining the same diameter throughout. Other styles include using sand, cerrobend, or frozen water2. These allow for a somewhat constant diameter while providing an inexpensive alternative to the aforementioned styles.

Process Results

There are several factors that effect the process results:- Workpiece material - Stainless steel, mild steel, copper, brass, aluminum, titanium, etc.- Bend geometry- Lubrication - type and quality- Sturdiness of workholding methods- Rigidity of actual bending equipment- Surface finish of holding tools

Tool Materials

Much of the tooling is made of hardened steel or tooled steel to maintain and prolong the tools life. However wherever there is a concern of scratching or gouging the work piece, a softer material such as aluminum or bronze is utilized. For example, the clamping block, rotating form block and pressure die are often formed from the hardened steel because the tubing is not moving past these parts of the machine. On the other hand, the pressure die and the wiping die are formed from aluminum or bronze to maintain the shape and surface of the workpiece as it slides by.

Power Requirements

The power required to bend the tubing is directly dependent on the tubing’s material, diameter, and wall thickness. For a wall thickness of 0.035 inches and a tubing material of aluminum the typical power requirements range from 4 to 80 foot-pounds. While steel tubing from of the same thickness typically requires power in the range between 12 and 245 foot-pounds.

Calculations

To calculate the speed at which a particular bend can be made in the workpiece, one must utilize the following formula where ? is the angle of the bend (in degrees) and R is the rate of the bend (in degrees per second).Speed = ?/R
